Have you ever tried to paste text into an AIM instant message, but an error came up saying the text was too long? There are many AIM Tricks that work around these limitations or enable you to do things not intended by the AIM client. Below is a list of AIM Tricks
AIM 4.7 Tricks
1)Find the buddy of your dreams!
Have you ever wanted to find a hot girl or guy to chat with through AIM? Now you can! http://www.BuddyDating.com is a match maker for AIM users. Create a profile for free, upload your picture, and then search for the buddy of your dreams! When you find someone you want to chat with, you can instant message them right away or add them to your buddy list and chat with later!
2)Crash someone's AIM with a hyperlink!
Only works on people running AIM 4.7 or earlier!
Copy and paste either of the two URLS below to the person you want to crash, if the person clicks on the hyperlink that is sent to them, their AIM client will crash and they will be booted and have to sign back on:
aim:addbuddy?screenname=Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness&groupname=Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darkness,Darknessaim:addbuddy?screenname=Dark
or this one:
aim:AlertsInternal?Command=1&ProviderID=5d5e170a-55aa-11d3-b143-0060b0fb1ecb&AlertID=1&Symbol=
To make the crash hyperlink look less obvious, use the "link" button in your IM window, and then paste one of the crash URLS above into the "Hyperlink URL" field, and then type some clever text into the "Hyperlink Text" field.
3)Make your buddies floppy drive spin up!
To spin up a buddies floppy drive while chatting with them, you need to Directly Connect to your buddy. This is done by clicking on the "Connect to Send IM Image" icon in the IM window toolbar:
Once you and your buddy have established a Direct Connection, copy and paste this code to your buddy: <img src="a:">
Note: You must copy and paste this code into the IM from this webpage, typing it into the IM directly will not work.
When you paste this code into your IM you will not see anything, but when you send it, it will appear as a box with a picture of a computer in it. Sending this code to your buddy will spin up the floppy drive, attempting to read a disk. If there is no disk in your buddies floppy, the following dialog box will pop up:
For a longer effect, paste the code in to the IM multiple times before sending it, so it will attempt to read from the floppy more then once.
4)View AOL profiles from the web!
If you try to view the profile of an AOL member from AIM you will get the following error message:
Note: AOL member profiles are not accessible through AOL Instant Messenger.
To view an AOL members profile, you can go to Http://www.profilespy.com and then enter the users screen name into the search form. You will now be able to view AOL members profiles!
5)Make your screen name animate on your friends buddy list
To make your screen name animate on your friends buddy list, you need to download the following program:
AIM Screen Name Animator
Extract that program somewhere on to your computer and then run it while you have AIM open:
It will recognize the screen name you are logged in with and display your current screen name format. Now choose the animation sequence you want to use and then click "Start" to begin the animation of your screen name, click "Stop" when you want to stop it. Add your own screen name to your buddy list and then run the animation to see what it looks like, you may have to turn the speed down in order for some animations to work. Speed 1 seems to work well with all the animations.
6)Always appear idle even when you are not
If you are running Windows 2000/XP and AIM 4.8 then you can download the Instant Idler program to go "idle" and "active" with a click of a button. Otherwise, you will have to:
To make it so you always appear idle you need to download this file:
Always Idle DLL: idlemon.dll
Now close AIM completely and then copy that file over the existing idlemon.dll file that is in your AIM95 directory. Most likely your AIM95 directory is located at "C:/Program Files/AIM95". Now restart AIM, and when you log back on, your name will always appear idle.
To revert back to a non permanent idle state, you must download the original idlemon.dll file and copy it back into your AIM95 directory:
Original DLL: idlemon.dll
7)Appear away even while chatting with your
buddies
If you want to make it so you never appear idle on anyone's buddy list, first bring up your AIM Preferences window by clicking the preferences icon in the Buddy List toolbar
or by right clicking your system tray AIM icon.
Now select the "Away Message" category on the left hand side, and then select an away message from the list on the right (the message you choose does not matter).

|
Click the "I'm Away" button, and your away message box will pop up. Make sure to close all your IM windows and then hit the space bar about 20 times really fast. Hitting the space bar pushes the "I'm Back" button and then the "I'm Away" button (you can do it by clicking the buttons yourself, but hitting the space bar is easier). Make sure to end off with the "I'm Back" button, if you have your own screen name on your buddy list you will notice that the little yellow "away message" is still next to your name. You can now chat with your buddies and your away message will not disappear. It just makes you appear away, so if someone does IM you, they won't get your away message. To remove the the fake away appearance, just set a real away message and then click "I'm Back".
8)Send a 10 second sound clip using your microphone
To send a 10 second sound clip using your microphone, first you need to directly connect to your buddy. This is done by clicking on the "Connect to Send IM Image" icon in the IM window toolbar:
Once you and your buddy have established a Direct Connection, press the "F12" key on your keyboard to record a sound clip up to 10 seconds long. When you are done, the sound clip will be sent to your buddy and it will play though your buddies speakers. You can have a lot of fun with this, because it's a combination of text and voice chatting.
9)Complete list of "aim:" codes and how to use them
You can use AIM codes in hyperlinks to interact with the AIM client. Here is the list of AIM codes and how to use them:

10)Get rid of the Instant Message character paste limit
Problem: The AIM Instant Message window limits you from sending anything more then 1024 characters. This means if you want to paste a long story, IM conversations, or an IM that contains lots of hidden html tags (bold words, colored text all takes up extra characters) you will get the error message displayed above.
Solution: To get rid of the character paste limit, you need to Directly Connect to your buddy. This is done by clicking on the "Connect to Send IM Image" icon in the IM window toolbar:
Once you and your buddy have established a Direct Connection, there will no longer be a character paste limitation.
11)Monitor the time your buddy signs on and off while you are away
To monitor the exact time your buddy signs on and off while you are away, you need to enable the time stamp feature. First bring up your AIM Preferences window by clicking the preferences icon in the Buddy List toolbar
or by right clicking your system tray AIM icon.
Now select the "IM/Chat" category on the left hand side, and then check the box that says "Always view timestamp".
Return to your buddy list and double click the screen name of the buddy you would like to monitor. This will bring up an empty Instant Message box, leave this box open while you are away and when you return, you will see the exact time your buddy signed on and off.
12)Send instant messages without downloading AIM
If you want to send and receive instant messages without downloading and installing the the AIM software, you can log on to AIM using AIM Express. Any computer with a web browser that is connected to the internet can load AIM Express without downloading or installing any software. Click the AIM Express link below to begin.
AIM Express: http://www.aim.com/get_aim/express/aim_expr.adp
Click on the red "Start" button on the AIM Express web page to load the AIM Express interface.
Enter your AIM Screen Name and Password in the appropriate fields, and then click the "Sign On" button. Your buddy list will load in a new window, and you will now be able to send and receive instant messages and use other limited AIM features.
